Phishing links
Don’t click on direct links (in emails, text messages, etc), especially those who are asking you for your personal details or Credentials. Any link can be a Phishing link, so the best thing would be to go to the source and give details. Sometimes there are many links which redirect you to some undesired website to prevent this from happening we can always hover over the link to see the real link before clicking on to the link.
Phishing Calls
Don’t respond to a phone call asking you for personal or financial information. If you are concerned, find the correct number and call the organization yourself. I personally have experienced a phishing call in my case the lady was trying to get my credit card information by telling me that my bank account has some problem to fix the problem I will have to give my credit card info. In your case it can be something else but most of the time they will be after your bank account information or your personal details, in either case, don’t give them anything but if you are really worried then you should call the organization yourself or physically take a visit to the organization.
Think before you share
Think before you share your personal information on any social media. Oversharing your information on social media can be a real disaster, first of all, hackers can create a spear-phishing attack from that information. But more importantly they can know your location, let me give you an example. So I have a friend who shared a photo of herself on social media. The photo had shown her standing in front of a famous statue, so with help of that photo, the hacker came to know that she is out of town and then the hacker stole some cash from her home.
Be aware of your surrounding
Be aware of your surroundings because many times when you are typing your password there can be someone who is standing somewhere near you trying to see you type. This is known as shoulder surfing (the practice of spying on the user of a cash-dispensing machine or other electronic device in order to obtain their personal identification number, password, etc). So better be aware of who is around you.
Keep your accounts and devices safe
Many times I have noticed that someone will log in into their Gmail or some other account but forget to log out from the account. Now this thing is acceptable when the device is yours but when you do this thing in public places like a library or some cyber cafe then it becomes really dangerous really quick. One more thing if the device is not yours, then you wouldn’t know what software the device is containing it may contain a keylogger so the best thing anyone can do is have a secondary account especially for these kinds of situation, so even if your credentials get stolen it was not of your main account. The same thing goes with your devices, don’t let strangers use your device and don’t let them plug any kind of device (like Pendrive, USB stick) into your smartphone or laptop.
